Harmony

The film shown here shows an extract from the Harmony program designed for the Global Music Campus. It is intended for use in music schools in Africa. This course is a step by step introduction to functional harmony. The course concentrates on developing the students harmonic knowledge freed from a cultural context (Western Music), allowing them to use these tools to write their own music and expand their harmonic vocabulary in an African context. The course was designed as a practical program. As singing solfa is a very important part of music making in Africa and instruments are sometimes difficult to obtain the harmony classes involve lots of singing so that students can hear the harmony and work without instruments.
